New Years in Mabua

Wildflowers in the Kgalagadi

The first night of 2025 would be spent in the bush. We were headed to Mabuasehube on New Year’s Day to spend 4 nights in the Kgalagadi. We were off to a rocky start though when a noise from the car first thing on New Year’s Eve sent Dru scurrying off to the mechanic with the hope that they could take a look.  Luckily they were able to diagnose and fix the problem, even though they weren’t even supposed to be open.

Our other problem was that Dru had woken up with a sore throat and we were worried that it was the start of a cold or flu. So off to the doctor and armed with everything from throat spray to antibiotics we decided to see how he felt the next day to make a call on whether we would go or not. And we were really not getting off to a great start when just as we were about to start packing, the heavens opened up and proceeded to dump a ton of rain down on Gaborone.

We waited a few hours but it was still drizzling and we didn’t want to tempt fate by packing in the rain and Dru getting more sick so in the end decided to pack in the morning if we were going. In the meantime we’d enjoy New Year’s Eve, miss out on ringing in the new year in exchange for some good sleep and hope that the trip was on in the morning.
