Khutse GR - Day 3

An empty waterhole and more clouds on the way

Our luck had completely deserted us in Khutse. Another bust of a morning drive with nothing but the honey badger that we’d seen the previous day, too far away to photograph. The waterhole was empty bar one eland and 2 gemsbok which all ran before we were even 200m away from them.

Finally found some wildebeest at Khutse Pan

So coffee was with a view of an empty waterhole. We did a bit of driving around but in the end left early to catch the top of the park before cat time was finished. It didn’t matter though, as there weren’t any cats to catch there. Even the dead elephant at the Khutse Pan waterhole remained untouched - a testament to the lack of predators in the area.

More clouds on the way home

A quick stop for a breakfast of chicken wings and crackers with ham and we were out of the park. Khutse has been disappointing in terms of game, especially predators. But we did endure one of the most ferocious storms in a rooftent and to hear lions roaring loudly at night is always special. So as usual on our way back to Gabs, we’ll question whether it’s worth going to Khutse. But no doubt we’ll be packing the car again for this little corner of the Kalahari when we need our bush fix.

Plenty of rain around
